There is a wealth of information available to the prospective Labrador
Retriever owner on the website of the Labrador
Retriever Club and in numerous books on the breed.
Labrador Retrievers are:
- Good natured, friendly to all and devoted to their families
- Good with children but might be a bit too rambunctious for very
small children
- Natural swimmers and (obviously) retrievers
- Fun-loving, intelligent and obedient
- Strong and robust
- “Wash-and-wear dogs” with low maintenance for coat
care, but still need regular brushing and toenail trims.
Labrador Retrievers are not:
- Guard dogs, barn-dogs, or herding dogs
- Aggressive
Labrador Retrievers need:
- To be close to their humans and part of the family
- A good-quality, high (5’) fence
- Regular exercise and fun (like long walks, chasing balls or swimming)
- Lots of attention and affection
- Someone to watch their weight for them
- Regular visits to their veterinarian and all recommended treatments
(DHLLP, Lyme, Rabies, Bordatella) as well as Heartworm and Flea & Tick
preventive medications
